OVERVIEW

Professional context and course purpose

Build decision-useful analytics for serious injury and fatality prevention rather than another dashboard of lagging counts. Learners connect indicators and models to defined risk pathways, controls and interventions.

Use AI to organize complex evidence and find patterns without replacing investigative judgment. The course promotes systems-oriented learning, disciplined evidence handling and higher-quality corrective actions.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

You will learn how to:

  1. Define valid leading indicators and SIF or potential-SIF measures that are explicitly linked to exposure, control health, organizational capacity and credible high-consequence scenarios.

  2. Prepare data and build an interpretable baseline model, anomaly-detection method or risk-scoring approach suited to the available evidence and operational decision.

  3. Assess completeness, validity, consistency, timeliness, representativeness, labeling quality and provenance using a repeatable data-quality scorecard.

  4. Distinguish correlation from causation, develop testable hypotheses, and communicate uncertainty before recommending operational action.

  5. Evaluate precision, recall, false-negative risk, calibration, drift, subgroup performance and uncertainty, and explain why accuracy alone is insufficient.

  6. Set action thresholds and intervention protocols based on risk appetite, decision urgency and the consequences of false positives and false negatives.

  7. Create a management dashboard and model card that communicate drivers, limitations, ownership, monitoring requirements and conditions for suspension or retraining.

  8. Ingest, de-identify and structure incident evidence and narratives while preserving confidentiality, source attribution and an auditable evidence trail.

  9. Construct an event timeline, identify contradictions and information gaps, and generate targeted follow-up questions for interviews and document review.

  10. Apply causal analysis that differentiates frontline actions from technical, organizational and work-system contributors and avoids premature blame or single-cause conclusions.

  11. Code incident and near-miss data using a consistent taxonomy, then use AI-assisted text analytics to identify recurring themes, weak signals and control failures.

  12. Produce a concise learning brief and action plan with owners, due dates, effectiveness measures and mechanisms for integrating lessons into organizational memory.
