Practical AI Use, Workplace Risk Assessment, and Evidence-Based Decision-Making
OVERVIEW
Professional context and course purpose
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in reporting, monitoring, scheduling, inspections, analytics, document review, worker communication, and operational decision support. For safety, health, risk, ergonomics, and related professionals, effective AI use requires more than prompt-writing skills.
RAAI-AI100 provides a practical, non-coding foundation for using AI responsibly and assessing how AI-enabled systems may affect people, work, and risk. The course addresses AI both as a professional tool and as a workplace system that may introduce or change safety, health, ergonomic, psychosocial, privacy, security, and organizational hazards.
Through realistic cases, guided exercises, and structured assessments, participants learn how to evaluate AI systems and data, verify outputs and performance claims, design controlled AI-assisted workflows, assess use-case impacts, and establish monitoring, management-of-change, stop-use, and incident-response requirements.
Particular emphasis is placed on approved tools, information protection, professional boundaries, worker impacts, human oversight, evidence traceability, uncertainty, local validation, and accountable decision-making. AI is treated as a support capability, not as a replacement for qualified professionals or authorized decision-makers.
Participants develop four practical portfolio deliverables and complete a controlled exercise that requires them to make and defend an evidence-based recommendation.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
You will learn how to:
Determine whether a task, tool, data set, and professional authority are appropriate for AI use before information is entered into a system.
Characterize an AI-enabled system, including its model, application, data, function, autonomy, permissions, integrations, operating context, limitations, and foreseeable misuse.
Identify how AI may introduce or modify safety, health, ergonomic, psychosocial, organizational, privacy, security, and equity risks.
Evaluate data quality, labels, performance metrics, uncertainty, subgroup results, failure modes, bias, security risks, and local validation evidence.
Conduct an AI Use-Case Impact and Control Assessment covering value, non-AI alternatives, affected workers, evidence, human factors, controls, residual risk, and decision authority.
Design a bounded, source-grounded, and secure AI-assisted work protocol with structured outputs, abstention rules, test cases, verification steps, and qualified human review.
Verify AI-generated claims, calculations, references, recommendations, and system-performance evidence before relying on them in professional work.
Establish effective human oversight, worker consultation, contestability, documentation, escalation, and professional-boundary controls.
Develop a pilot and monitoring plan with acceptance criteria, accountable roles, fallback arrangements, management-of-change triggers, stop-use conditions, and incident-response actions.
Communicate and defend an AI-related recommendation while clearly stating the evidence, uncertainty, limitations, required controls, and conditions that would change the decision.
